Getting UC San Diego students to actually use Microsoft Copilot

I was one of three Copilot ambassadors at UC San Diego. I made the reels, carousels and stories, and I worked the tabling events on campus. My one rule: put Copilot inside a normal student day instead of pitching it at people. By the end of Fall, our team was #1 in the country for impressions and engagement.

My partI made 7 feed posts and 10 Stories, worked 4 tabling events, and sent the program a report on what was working every two weeks.

Views are from Instagram Insights across all seven posts, Aug 2025 to Jun 2026. Downloads come from the program’s tracking (200+ in Fall, 300+ in Spring). The #1 is Fall 2025 only, and it belongs to the whole UC San Diego team, not just me.

Everything I posted, and how it did

Two carousels, five reels and ten stories (13 clips) over two semesters. Here’s what each one was going for and how it actually did. All the numbers are from Instagram Insights, and engagement rate means interactions ÷ reach.

Fit check into a day plan
Starts as a fit check with callouts on the cap, the patchwork denim, the messenger bag and the loafers, plus one question for Mico: where should I go in San Diego? The next slides are the answer. Walking North Park with Mico bouncing along, then all the food from the day on one table with every stop named, from Marigold Bagels to Stella Jeans.
Why it works
People already stop for fit checks, and the prompt turns it into a question everyone has on a free weekend. The last slide is a list you can actually go use, so Copilot comes off as the thing that planned a good day instead of the thing being sold to you.

Scroll the feed inside the phone, or open any post full screen. It’s all muted because these were made to work on silent. Tap Mico if you want a number in normal-people terms.

What my work actually did

Seven posts, ten stories and four tabling events over two semesters. Sort the posts by whatever you care about, open one to see the idea behind it, then see what the numbers taught me. Every number says whose it is: mine, my school team’s, or the whole program’s.

Which piece did what

Pick a metric and the seven posts re-sort. Click a post to see why I made it that way and where it ranks on everything else. Spoiler: the most-watched post and the most-loved post aren’t the same one.

Views — Every play or slide view, repeats included. Average across these 7: 10.7K.

So what is Copilot?

The most-watched thing I made all year. 31,376 views, almost four times my best reel.

The idea · Moving background, static person

Why it works — Motion stops the scroll. The frozen version of me keeps focus locked. That weird contrast buys a few extra seconds and the infographic lands the message without getting in the way.

What the numbers taught me

Six things I’d do again, each backed by a number you can check up there.

The one I’d read first is the last one.

LESSON 01

Make the scroll itself the hook

31.4K

views, more than all 5 reels put together (28.3K)

A moving background behind a frozen me, then a clean explainer. It also got the most shares of anything I posted (34), so people were sending it to friends.

LESSON 02

Give people something they can use

9.7%

engagement rate, my best, plus the most comments and profile visits

A day out planned by one prompt, ending on a list of real places. 40 comments, 326 profile visits, and the only post anyone reposted.

LESSON 03

Show the product doing the work

22

comments, the most of any reel, plus the most saves of all seven (6)

Lecture notes in, practice quiz out, answers explained, all on screen. It won the program’s Best Educational Video award.

LESSON 04

Put the product at the reveal, not the pitch

43.1%

made it past the hook. My best-held reel, and the most new follows (5)

A fit-check series you watch to the end for the last look. And the last look is “Styled with Copilot.”

LESSON 05

Ask for a tap, not a like

143

sticker taps, 42% of every tap across my 10 stories

The notebook-packing story asked people to do something instead of watch something, and hit a 22.1% engagement rate.

LESSON 06

Judges and the algorithm are different audiences

73.5%

skipped the swag reel. My weakest hook.

The same reel won the program’s Most Creative Content award. Both are true: the idea won the room, and the opening lost the feed.

In person: the booth and the pop-ups

It wasn’t all content. I worked the tabling events on campus and ran the stories around them: the prep, the invite, then the pop-ups.

The booth, told on Stories

  1. PREP · Fall ’25

    Packing “Speak Your Mind” notebooks

    1,161 reached · 143 sticker taps · 22.1% engagement

  2. INVITE · Fall ’25

Stop by our booth on Library Walk

    1,143 reached · 28 sticker taps · 6.8% engagement

  3. POP-UP · Spring ’26 · UCSD Stories

You Got Mail — free Pop Up Bagels

    1,580 reached · 16 sticker taps · 1.7% engagement

  4. POP-UP · Spring ’26 · UCSD Stories

You Got Mail — free In-N-Out

    1,169 reached · 21 sticker taps · 2.6% engagement

The two pop-ups went on UCSD’s shared campus Story, which only UCSD students can post to. That’s a bigger audience than my own account, which is why their reach is highest.

Two awards, and a team that finished first

The two awards went to my posts, judged across the whole program. The #1 ranking belongs to our UC San Diego team of three, and the program totals cover every ambassador in the country. I keep them apart so nothing looks bigger than it was.

These are Fall 2025 numbers for all three UC San Diego ambassadors together, not just my posts. The program never shared the same breakdown for Spring 2026, so there’s nothing to line them up against.

Post and story numbers are exported from Instagram Insights. Downloads and tabling come from the program’s own tracking.

What this shows

  • Reels, carousels and stories built on one rule: put Copilot inside a normal student day
  • Tabling and pop-ups on campus, run alongside the feed
  • Instagram Insights read post by post, then written up as a six-lesson playbook

If I did it againI’d spend more of my time on the first second. The swag reel won an award and still lost 73.5% of viewers at the hook, so the idea was never the weak part.
